Description

Who sells online in the United Kingdom?

If you sell to online stores — software, logistics, packaging, payments, advertising, wholesale stock — the first question is always the same: who are they? No register lists them. Companies House does not know which company runs a webshop, and a search result is not a list.

So we crawled UK domains one by one and kept the ones with a real, working online store behind them — a cart, a payment method and a legal notice — then matched them to the Companies House register. This table is the result.

What is in the table?

  • 28,411 active UK online stores — not companies that might have a shop, but shops we actually checked
  • A registered company on every row — 8,981 of them (31.6%) carry the official Companies House name, with company number (55.0%), status (50.8%) and registered office (50.8%)
  • Business e-mail (64.8%) and phone (79.6%) — as published by the shop itself: info@, sales@, support@ and the like
  • VAT number (26.9%) — only where the shop published it with a GB prefix
  • What it sells: product categories (95.8%) and the shop’s own description (85.5%)
  • Data completeness score (1–6) on every row, so you can sort the best-filled rows to the top

The platform each shop runs on

If you sell a Shopify app, don’t contact 28 thousand shops — contact the ones it is meant for. The table also records the payment, delivery, newsletter, analytics, review and cookie-consent providers found on each site.

And what it sells — official SIC industry

50.4% of the rows carry the official SIC 2007 section from the register, with the full SIC text in a separate column:

The file

  • Excel table (XLSX), instant download after payment (the link is valid for 30 days, up to 5 downloads)
  • Webshops sheet — 34 columns, one row per business, English header
  • Summary — the breakdowns you see on this page, in numbers
  • Field descriptions — every column with its source and fill rate
  • Information — what the list is, where it comes from and how it may be used lawfully
  • SOURCES.txt — the Companies House attribution required by the Open Government Licence

One business = one row. Sites reachable on several domains are merged.

What we have to say honestly

  • The company data is not there for every row. UK sites block automated visitors far more often than Hungarian ones, so the legal-notice page could only be read for 67.6% of the shops. That is why the VAT number is 26.9% and the registered address 50.8%, while the company name is on every row. A re-crawl that handles blocking is planned for the 2027/Q1 edition.
  • 246 rows belong to a company that is not in “Active” status (proposal to strike off, liquidation, dormant, non-trading). We did not drop them — the Company status column tells you, so you can filter.
  • The Legal form column uses two vocabularies: the official Companies House category where the register matched (31.6%), and the form read from the name itself elsewhere (“Limited”). Both describe a registered company.
  • The town is missing for 36% of the shops. Where the address the business published does not contain a postcode, the town cannot be derived, so the City column is empty — the full address is still in Street address. Wrong town values (country names, street fragments) were corrected against the official postcode-to-post-town table.
  • No domain registration year in this edition, and no revenue or headcount. The latter can be matched from other sources via the company number.
  • The table is a snapshot (autumn 2026). Businesses open and close; in six months it will be less accurate. This price does not include updates.
  • No contact person names and no e-mail addresses containing a person’s name. Where a business only published such an address, the row has no e-mail.
Sources. Company name, company number, status, registered office and SIC code come from the Companies House Free Company Data Product (snapshot 1 October 2026). Contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Everything else was collected from the businesses’ own public web pages. A SOURCES.txt with the full attribution is included with the download.
Your obligations as the new controller. These are business contact details the companies published themselves, plus public register data. When you use them, UK law applies to you: give the Article 14 privacy notice at the latest with your first message; for electronic marketing follow PECR (corporate subscribers may be e-mailed with an opt-out, sole traders and individuals may not without consent — this edition contains registered companies only); screen telephone numbers against the CTPS before calling; and act on objections you receive. The full terms are in our Terms and Conditions (Annex 2/GB) and on the Information sheet of the file.
